Sandra Yeh, M.D.
Sandra Yeh, M.D. is the president and founder of Prairie Eye Center. She graduated from Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago in 1986. After completing her internship at Northwestern, she followed with a residency in ophthalmology at Indiana University Medical Center.
Upon moving to Springfield, she joined the practice of Michael Walsh, M.D. When Dr. Walsh retired, Dr. Yeh expanded her practice to its present location at 2020 West Iles Ave., Springfield, Ill.
Dr. Yeh is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, as well as, a member of the Sangamon County Medical Society. She has been invited to join a prestigious group of ophthalmologists to serve as Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
She concentrates her practice on general ophthalmology and LASIK refractive surgery which allows qualifying patients to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Additionally, Dr. Yeh performs no stitch/no patch cataract surgery and now offers great news for her cataract patients. She is highly experienced in implanting the new advanced technology lenses including the Restor, Crystalens ,Rezoom and theTecnis Multifocal which now allows patients to see a broader range of vision including the ability to read without glasses.
Dr. Yeh accepts Medicare assignment and she is currently accepting new patients into her practice.
Frederick M. Rauscher, M.D.
Fred Rauscher, M.D. is a native of Northwest Indiana and graduated "With Highest Distinction" from Indiana University. During medical school at Duke University he was elected to the AOA Medical Honor Society. He has won awards from the American Diabetes Association, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and Congressional Glaucoma Foundation for his efforts to prevent and cure blindness. Dr. Rauscher completed both his residency in opthalmology and fellowship in glaucoma at the world famous Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.
Dr. Rauscher specializes in glaucoma care, and is an expert cataract, glaucoma and cornea surgeon, including laser surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Opthalmology and American Glaucoma Society. In 2008, Dr. Rauscher decided to bring his expertise and caring spirit to Springfield, where he accepts Medicare assignment and participates with most insurance plans. Dr. Rauscher has an upbeat, friendly personality, can speak Spanish, and is currently accepting new patients into his practice.
William W. Yang, M.D.
William Yang, M.D. received his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at the University of Chicago in 1998. He spent the next two years in Morocco with the Peace Corps. After returning to the United States, Dr. Yang pursued his medical degree at the University of Wisconsin. His subsequent ophthalmology training was done at Texas Tech University. Dr. Yang went on to complete his Fellowship in Cornea and refractive surgery at Albany Medical College in New York.
Dr. Yang joined Prairie Eye Center in August of 2010 and he maintains hospital privileges at all hospitals in Springfield and Lincoln, Illinois. He concentrates his practice on corneal transplants and cataract surgery. Dr. Yang accepts Medicare assignment and participates with most insurance plans. He is currently accepting new patients into the Springfield and Lincoln locations.
Colin Scott, M.D.
Colin Scott, M.D. graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with his bachelor’s degree in biology and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio. He completed his neurology residency from the University of Wisconsin, and his ophthalmology residency from Nassau University Medical Center/Stony Brook University in Long Island, New York. He received his fellowship training in neuro-ophthalmology from the University of Iowa, where he was a Fight for Sight fellowship grant recipient. Dr. Scott has been very active in ophthalmic research. He completed a research fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Washington University in St. Louis.
He has published numerous articles and was the principal investigator of multiple studies, including prospective experimental clinical trials. His findings have been presented at many national meetings, and he is a member of several professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Scott specializes in neuro-ophthalmology and cataract surgery. He joined Prairie Eye Center in January of 2014 and maintains privileges at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
Dr. Scott accepts Medicare assignment and participates with most insurance plans. He is currently accepting new patients into the Jacksonville and Springfield locations.
Mohamed Gendy, M.D.
Mohamed Gendy, M.D., Fellowship-Trained Retina Specialist and a board certified Ophthalmologist specializes in medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, epiretinal membranes, macular holes and retinal detachment.
He completed three years of residency in Ophthalmology at northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago. He then went on for a two-year Surgical Retina Fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, one of the most prestigious nationally known fellowships.
He served as an instructor in Ophthalmology, where he was actively involved in ophthalmology resident and medical student education.
Dr. Gendy’s research interests pertain to ocular imaging. He completed two research fellowships at the world-renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. He published peer-reviewed scientific publications and presented his work at numerous national meetings.
Dr. Gendy is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS).
He brings to us the latest advancements in medical and surgical treatments of retinal diseases and we are proud to bring this level of expertise to our community. Dr. Gendy strives to provide highly professional, caring, and compassionate care, and he looks forward to the opportunity to serve you. He is accepting new patients in Springfield and Decatur.
Paul Kowalski, M.D.
Paul Kowalski, M.D. is a board-certified Ophthalmologist, specializing in the treatment and management of various ophthalmic diseases and disorders including cataracts, glaucoma, and trauma.
Dr. Kowalski graduated from Marshall University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1980. He later went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine from Marshall in 1984. Dr. Kowalski completed his residency in ophthalmology from the prestigious University of Louisville in 1989.
Dr. Kowalski brings over 25 years of experience to Prairie Eye Center. He accepts Medicare assignment and participates with most insurance plans. He is currently accepting new patients at the Jacksonville and Beardstown locations.
Justin Johnsen, M.D.
Justin Johnsen, M.D. joined Prairie Eye and LASIK Center in 2016 from Salt Lake City, Utah, and is one of the most respected ocular and facial plastic surgeons in the country. He was a former Duke University professor who has conducted several studies in facial trauma, CO2 laser treatments, and facial reconstructive procedures.
Dr. Johnsen is fellowship trained in oculoplastic surgery. He specializes in blepharoplasty (eyelid lifts), orbital reconstruction, ptosis repair, oculofacial tumors, temporal artery biopsies, and full-facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Johnsen also provides many cosmetic services and is an expert in Botox®, Juvederm®, Voluma®, Sculptra®, CO2 laser skin resurfacing, eyebrow lifts; face lifts, and a variety of other cosmetic and anti-aging services.

Ankur M. Shah, M.D.
Ankur M. Shah, MD is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist and retina specialist. He obtained his medical degree at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of California in San Diego, where he served as Chief Resident. He then returned to Chicago where he completed a Medical Retina fellowship at Northwestern University Medical Center, followed by a Surgical Retina fellowship at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Dr. Shah specializes in treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusive disease, and ocular inflammation using the most effective pharmacologic and laser therapies. He provides surgical management of severe diabetic eye disease, retinal detachment, epiretinal membranes, and macular holes. Dr. Shah understands that these debilitating conditions can have a significant impact on one’s quality of life. Employing the latest advances in medical therapies and surgical techniques and technology, strong training, and genuine care, Dr. Shah strives to preserve and improve the vision of his patients so they can maintain their independence and enjoy their loved ones and the world around them.
Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr. Shah enjoys spending time with his twin sons and daughter. He enjoys travel, music, sports, and the great outdoors (weather permitting). Dr. Shah is accepting new patients in Springfield and Decatur.
Phillip Alward, M.D.
Dr. Phillip Alward, M.D. joined Prairie Eye Center in April of 2017. Dr. Alward graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from University of Illinois in 1973. From there he gained his M.D. from Chicago Medical school, graduating in the top third of his class. He was a resident first at St. Louis Group Hospitals in the Department of Internal Medicine from 1976-1977, and also at University of Illinois Department of Ophthalmology from 1977-1980.
Dr. Alward also spent several years in teaching and research for both Electrical Engineering and Ophthalmology at University of Illinois. He was a pre-residency Fellow in Glaucoma at University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. From his previous work and research, Dr. Alward designed several technologies for eye health and surgical instruments including the Intraocular Lens Implant, Iris Retractor, Nucleus Stabilizer among several other tools prominent in ophthalmology today.
Dr. Alward is able to diagnose, treat and perform various types of surgeries for diseases, injuries, or trauma of the eye. He may treat disorders such as dry eyes, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other retinal disorders.
Dr. Alward has been nominated for the last fifteen years to be included in "The Best Doctors in America; Midwest Region."
